Did you pay your taxes?  Big business didn't.

Happy Tax Day.

While millions of Americans will file their tax returns today, big businesses like CitiBank, Verizon, and Microsoft will secretly celebrate the billions of tax dollars they have dodged by shifting investments – especially profits -- to offshore tax havens.  Is it fair that you and I pay more in taxes than the most prosperous?  Citibank alone spent $6 million last year to lobby Congress for more tax loopholes that will cost American taxpayers $11 billion over two years.  As politicians obsess over deficit reduction we need to take serious action to close corporate tax loopholes and make sure everyone pays their fair share.

Attend an ADA “Who Pays?” Tax Day Rally:
Delaware - 5:30-6pm at the Newark Post Office.  (More info.)
Iowa - 4:30-5:30pm at the Waterloo Iowa Post Office, 300 Sycamore St. (More info.)
Indiana - 6:00-8:00pm at the Teamsters 364 Hall, 23383 US. 33 in Dunlap (More info)

Our taxes go back into our communities through programs and services that strengthen our schools, provide food and nutrition services for infants and children, health care for our seniors, financial aid for our students, infrastructure repair and more.  We need a tax system that [is] insures that we all pay our fair share.

Corporate Tax Dodger Trading Cards

Leading up to Tax Day, ADA and our coalition partner Americans for Tax Fairness (ATF) have been highlighting 10 corporate tax dodgers.  ATF has released a set of Corporate Tax Dodger Trading Cards to explain their tricks of the trade. Be sure to collect all 10 and see what makes these companies professional tax dodgers.

A Vote on Gun Control

The Senate will consider a compromise bill this week to expand the current background check system for gun purchases.  The bill would require background checks on all firearms for sale at gun shows or on the Internet, while exempting noncommercial, personal transactions.  It’s not as strong as we’d like, but it’s a positive step forward.

A few Republicans have already announced their support for the bill, but several other Senators (including Democrats) are on the fence. With the filibuster threat, the Senate needs 60 votes to pass this reasonable step towards smart gun reform.  If your Senators are on the list below, pick up the phone and urge them to vote “yes” on the Manchin-Toomey amendment.

Sen. Mark Begich (D-AK) - (202) 224-3004
