ADA’s field teams have been busy this August.  Last week, ADA Delaware and ADA Northern Indiana took tax fairness and immigration reform to the streets:

March for Tax Fairness
Last Saturday, ADA Delaware and our Americans for Tax Fairness coalition partners marched in the Middletown Peach Festival, with signs declaring that "Public Investment is Peachy" and “Corporate Tax Dodging is the Pits."  The coalition also tabled a booth where community members could stamp their dollar bills with a stamp saying, "This is $1 more than GE or BoA pay in taxes."  Community members were also encouraged to write their ideas for what the U.S. should do with the $150 billion lost annually due to tax dodging through the use of foreign tax havens.  Check out the highlights from this event here.

Immigration Reform Street Fair
Northern Indiana ADA is a proud member of the North Indiana Community Coalition for Immigration Reform.  We joined together with artists, musicians, faith leaders, and workers on Friday, August 16th for an immigration reform street fair in South Bend, Indiana.  Over 100 people were in attendance to listen to speakers for immigration reform, enjoy local bands and food.  Photo highlights here.

Going on This Week:

In Delaware:
How is the Sequester Affecting You?  -  On Wednesday, August 21st at 7pm ADA Delaware will meet at the Appoquinimink Library in Middletown, Delaware to learn about how the sequester has affected the MOT area and discuss federal corporate tax reform.  For more details, contact Ezra Temko at ezra@adaction.org.

March on Washington - Commemorate the 50th Anniversary of the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom by participating in this Realize the Dream March & Rally on Saturday, August 24 in Washington, DC.  You can travel for free - the Delaware chapter of the Coalition of Black Trade Unionists has two buses heading to DC - one leaving from Wilmington and one leaving from Newark.  They will leave at 5am.  Contact us if you are interested in a seat on either bus.

In Iowa:
Fair Courts Coalition Forum - Recent cases demonstrate that no matter the issue—health care, immigration, marriage equality, employment discrimination, privacy, or ethics—the judiciary will continue to play an increasingly important role in all our lives.  Join ADA Iowa on Tuesday, August 20th at the Thoreau Center for the Iowa Fair Courts Forum.  There is no charge to attend the event, but an RSVP is required. Lunch will be provided. RSVP today.

Pre Pride Transgender Panel - On Thursday, August 22nd at 6:30 pm, please join ADA Iowa’s 1st Annual Trans Panel to be held at 220E 4th St, Waterloo, Iowa 50703. The panel, featuring Dr. Katherine Imborek of The University of Iowa's LGBT Health Clinic and LGBT advocate Liz Bendalin, will conduct a community conversation on transgender issues. Free appetizers will be served at 6:30, with the panel beginning at 7:00pm.  RSVP here.

Cedar Valley Pride Fest - Join ADA Iowa on Saturday, August 24th from Noon to Midnight at West Fourth Street to celebrate the diversity of our community. It’s not just for the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender people of the Cedar Valley. It’s for everyone — come discover what it means to be LGBT in the Cedar Valley and stand for diversity, inclusion and acceptance.  For tickets and more details visit:  http://www.cedarvalleypride.com

In Indiana:
Budget Forum on Protecting Social Security and Medicare - On Thursday, August 22nd Northern Indiana ADA will host a budget forum on the importance of preserving Social Security and Medicare.  Instead of cutting these important, successful programs, we need to eliminate tax loopholes and fight for corporations to pay their fair share. The Forum will be held at the Greencroft Senior Center located at 1721 Greencroft Blvd, Goshen, IN 46526.

On the Horizon:

Delaware ADA's First Chapter Meeting - Delaware ADA will host its first chapter meeting Wednesday, August 28. Come and learn more about our group; get to know fellow progressives, and brainstorm issues we'll be focusing on in the near future.  The meeting will be from 7pm-8:05pm at the Newark library.  Afterwards everyone interested is welcome to retire to Home Grown for drinks and discussions.  Save the date - we will be meeting on the Fourth Wednesday of every month!  Contact us for more information.
