Legislative Action

Tell Congress to Promote Peace, not Provoke War

ADA activists working in coalition with dozens of organizations, have stalled Congress from passing H. Con. Res 362.  This bill, when boiled down, is a blockade around Iran which could provoke a violent incident and lead to war.  ADA supports an alternative bill, H. Con. Res 321, which calls for a diplomatic, peace oriented inititiative in the Middle East.

Action Needed for Fair Pay

The House is expected to vote this week on the Paycheck Fairness Act (H.R. 1338).  We have a critical opportunity to urge Congress to make real progress on pay equity. The Paycheck Fairness Act would update and strengthen the Equal Pay Act of 1963, closing loop holes and improving the law's effectiveness.  Itwould deter wage discrimination by strengthening penalties for equal pay violations and prohibiting retaliation against workers who inquire about employers' wage practices or disclose their own wages.

Congress to Recess; Find them in your District

While Congress is set to recess for the month of August, there are still many issues yet to be resolved.  Take the opportunity to visit your Senators and Representative while they are home.  Here is a list of issues on which ADA is urging action:

  • A second economic stimulus package to help working families adjust to inflation, stagnant wages, and job loss.
  • Heating and cooling assistance for low income families, seniors and the disabled (blocked by Republicans on Saturday).
  • Withdrawal from Iraq and a peace-oriented foreign policy in other parts of the Middle East.
