I have some promising news on clean energy and fair trade -- and a chance for you to take action on a critical item immediately.
American Clean Energy and Security Act -- House Vote TODAY!
The Michigan Leadership Workshop and its Working Families Win affiliates nationally applaud the progress embodied in the House of Representatives' American Clean Energy and Security Act (H.R. 2454). The legislation is scheduled to be voted on Friday, June 26th. We urge Michigan's members of Congress to support the Act.
Included in the legislation are significant steps toward a needed transition to a green economy, including provisions that encourage fuel efficient vehicle production, provide for environmental and habitat impact data collection, investments in renewable energy production, environmental protection for natural resources, worker transition assistance, consumer cost protections, and the job creating impact of the package as a whole.
Calls to your member of Congress NOW will be critical toward the passage of this important legislation, as some legislators are still on the fence and the vote is expected to be very, very close. Click here to contact your member of Congress. Tell them that Michigan's economy needs the American Clean Energy and Security Act. H.R. 2454 will create tens of thousands of needed jobs for Michigan's ailing economy while at the same time helping us tackle the climate crisis.
TRADE Act Introduced -- Thanks to YOU and Co-Sponsors!
Many of you stepped up to urge your member of Congress to sign on as a co-sponsor of the TRADE Act. Thanks to your efforts, the Act was introduced on Wednesday with seven Michigan original co-sponsors! The following representatives listened to you and deserve our appreciation:
Bart Stupak (CD 1)
Dale Kildee (CD 5)
Mark Schauer (CD 7)
Gary Peters (CD 9)
Carolyn Kilpatrick (CD 13)
John Conyers (CD 14)
John Dingell (CD 15)
The 2009 TRADE Act, introduced by Representative Mike Michaud (D-ME), establishes a new trade model that seeks to correct imbalances in existing trade pacts and lays the ground work for future trade agreements that will promote good jobs, product safety, human rights, and essential environmental protection. The legislation also articulates that certain provisions included in NAFTA-era trade deals such as investor protections that undermine state-sovereignty and damaging agricultural provisions that have destroyed small farmers should not be included future trade agreements.
Again, thank you for your great work. Let's get our calls in now on H.R. 2454 so that we can see another win for Michigan's working families!
