Real Unemployment Rate at 16.77%
The real unemployment rate, released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is 16.7% -- a full 7 points higher than the officially reported rate. This means that there are 6.4 job seekers per job opening in November 2009, compared to 1.1 in 2000, before the crisis. ADA is keeping an eye on the Senate jobs bill, that proposes to give businesses a tax break by hiring unemployed workers. The word on the hill is that this bill may pass this week!
In addition, as we enter African American History Month, the 24.3% African American unemployment rate means that nearly one in four African Americans is jobless. The Congress and the President need to work together to make sure that the Great Recession's contribution to history is ending the disparate impact joblessness has on the African American community.
It's time to repeal "Don't Ask, Don't Tell"
ADA believes that the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy which has resulted in the removal of more than 11,000 members of our Nation's armed forces since its inception should be repealed. Last week, we were pleased to hear Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Michael Mullen take an important first step forward by discussing a review of the discriminatory "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy. Show your support for the repeal by sending a letter to your local newspaper! It's as easy as 1..2..3!

Anti-Abortion Ad Run During Superbowl
Quarterback Tim Tebow and his Mom taped anti-abortion ads for the ultra-conservative Focus on the Family to run during the Super Bowl. HERE is the ad that ran, which was, in the end much milder than expected (and at $2.1 million dollars, not a great use of resources). HERE is the Planned Parenthood response (which is being circulated on YouTube and by allies like ADA). Go to CBS's online form if you'd like to complain directly to CBS about politicizing the game.
