This Week in Congress
This week is a District Work Period which began with the President's Day Holiday. Most Senators and Members of Congress will be in their states and districts meeting with constituents. Now is the time for you to reach out to your elected officials and let them know of your stance on important issues; making sure that the jobs bill actually helps to create jobs, to finish health care and to finish it right, and to make sure that the federal budget protects important programs like Medicare, Medicaid, housing, education funding, and other important priorities. Make your voice heard - call the local district office this week!
Deadline Looming for Unemployment Benefits
Congress left for its Presidents' Day recess without renewing extended Unemployment Insurance, so hundreds of thousands of unemployed families are facing the potential of payless paydays. States are legally obliged to start notifying the jobless that their unemployment benefits will end and the extended benefits to which they are entitled to will expire on February 28. ADA has joined with other national, state, and local organizations to sign this letter urging Congress to extend unemployment benefits as an urgent first order of business when they return from a weeklong recess. Make sure that your Member of Congress knows of the importance of this issue!
Did You Get a Tax Break?
Odds are that you did and don't realize it. A recent CBS poll revealed that although 95% of Americans received a tax break last year, only 12% realize it! Furthermore, Americans that support the tea bagger movement were the least informed from the poll. 46% said that their taxes were the same, 44% believed that they increased and only 2% believed that they had decreased.
One of Our Own
This weekend's Washington Post notes the emerging trend in Maryland's elections about generational change and specifically cites ADA's own Cheryl Kagan of Rockville, MD. In 2010, the electorate is STILL seeking change, and change is STILL needed!
