The Unemployment Numbers
On Friday, BLS reported that the official unemployment rate was 9.7%, a modest improvement from the previous month as 431,000 jobs were added. While this is the 5th consecutive month of positive job growth, the real unemployment rate rose to 16.6%, reflecting the continuing need for job growth. "The economy is still in a tenuous position." said Michael J. Wilson, ADA National Director. "So far we've avoided a double dip, and a jobless recovery. We are making progress. It's just not clear how long it will be before we have anything approaching regular employment." See our unemployment report here.
Jobs for the Youth?
Rep. McDermott (D-WA) has introduced a resolution, H.Res. 1396, focused on reducing youth unemployment. Based on ADA "Corps budget" principles, it would double funding for AmeriCorps, the Peace Corps, and the Job Corps by providing additional employment and training opportunities for high school, college and new entrants to the job market. Contact your representative today and ask them to co-sponsor H.Res. 1396.
More Work to be Done...
The Senate will return this week to complete work on the House-passed H.R. 4213, a bill to provide extended unemployment benefits as well as aid to states and local governments. This will be one of the central issues on the Senate floor, and Senators need to hear that this is an important issue to their constituents, so please contact your Senators (call the Capitol switchboard toll-free at 1-866-220-0044) and ask them to vote "aye" for the economy and in favor of H.R. 4213.
- On June 22, the ADA Education Fund will host a special screening of a soon-to-be-completed documentary, Brothers On The Line. This film explores the legacy of the Reuther brothers - Walter, Roy, and Victor - pioneering labor organizers and social justice statesman, and their remarkable leadership of the United Auto Workers union. Walter Reuther, of course, was also a founder of ADA. Preceded by a reception, it will be shown at the Letelier Theater in Georgetown. A limited number of passes are available.
