Today - We Are One.

43 years ago today, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, where he had gone to stand in solidarity with sanitation workers fighting for their right to bargain collectively for a better life.   Today, we join in solidarity with working people in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and dozens of other states where corporate funded, right-wing politicians are trying to take away the rights Dr. King gave his life for: the right to organize, to bargain collectively, to work together for justice and prosperity.  ADA members and chapters are participating in events across the country today.  Find an event near you here!

The ADA Education Fund also honored Dr. King at the annual "What Would Martin Do?" event held in celebration of King's birthday.  Watch the video highlights from this year's event with the Honorable Harris Wofford, the Honorable Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, and other prestigious panelists.

Another Showdown Over A Shutdown

Responsibility for averting a federal government shutdown this week rests largely with one man: House Speaker John Boehner (R-OH). The emotional Ohio Republican must decide whether he will risk the ire of the Tea Party in order to strike a deal with Senate Democrats and President Obama on the national budget for the remainder of this fiscal year.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) has tried to force the issue by claiming that a deal in principle has already been struck (which Boehner angrily denies), and taunting the Speaker for cowering before the Tea Party movement. But lost in all the political maneuvering are the worthy programs and people who will be hurt, even by the “compromise” budget offered by the Democrats.
