ADA's Statement on the Death of Osama Bin Laden
The news of the death of Osama Bin Laden provoked many reactions among Americans: celebration, somber reflection, anticipation of impending retaliation — all of them appropriate and predictable. But history reminds us that the death of Adolph Hitler — another mass murderer — did not in itself bring an end to World War II or the philosophy which led to the deaths of millions. This latest death — while certainly justified — won’t end the terrorism which has gripped the world over the last decade, end the wars in which our nation is currently involved, or bring back or repair the victims of the crimes Bin Laden committed. What is needed is a comprehensive foreign policy and a renewed commitment to international institutions, combined with modern intelligence operations and the appropriate use of military force.
In the meantime, let us recommit ourselves to striving for peace and justice, goals that can be celebrated by us all.
