The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act (SAFRA) was passed by the House of Representatives, but is currently stalled in the Senate. The bill removes subsidies to banks and redirects that money to university students by creating a government run direct lender to students. During these difficult financial times Americans are struggling to afford college, while many banks are reporting record profits. The banking industry wants to keep the subsidies for themselves and is trying to prevent passage of this bill in the Senate.
