President at podiumA Message from Our Interim Executive Director

President calls for fairer taxes July 9

"Our prosperity has always come from an economy that's built on a strong and growing middle class - one that can buy products... own homes, send kids to college, and save enough to retire... we've tried it their way. It didn't work... Instead of creating more jobs, we had the slowest job growth in half a century. Instead of widespread prosperity, the typical family saw its income fall. And in just a few years, we went from record surpluses under Bill Clinton to record deficits."
-President Obama on extending tax cuts for the middle class

Progressive Maryland was honored to be invited to hear President Obama speak last Monday at the White House. Since our founding in 2001, tax fairness has been one of our most important issues. While we have made significant progress, state lawmakers failed again in 2012 to renew the modest "millionaires' tax" and to enact "combined reporting" to close loopholes that allow Pepco, Verizon, Walmart and many other wealthy multistate corporations to pay no tax to our state. As our advocacy for these important reforms continues, we will need your support and involvement in our work even more to succeed.

The current campaigns for Congress and president offer those who want to make life better for working families an historic opportunity to mobilize support for fairer taxation and economic justice at every level - to help us win in 2013 and beyond. The anemic economy and job growth caused by a decade of failed policies exposes the supply-side, trickle-down, anti-regulatory experiment as the elite-serving fraud it's always been. The tight 2012 races also demonstrate how the corrupt campaign funding system, PM's other top concern - amplified by the Citizens United ruling - has eroded our frail democracy to the point that only the most determined citizen action will save it.

Please join us in doing all you can to register, educate and turn out voters, and help elect progressive candidates now through November 6.
