A great example of local Census organizing

Friends and Colleagues,

Last week I had the opportunity to address the Latino Leadership Summit in Sacramento, California organized by the Sacramento Complete Count Committee. I was so impressed with the commitment and energy of our community leaders in Northern California to promote a full census count of Latinos.  And it was not just Latinos in the audience either; there were also leaders from the African American, Asian American and American Arab communities.  Former Sacramento Mayor Ann Rudin was in the audience of more than 200, convened at California State University Sacramento.  The Latino participants  ranged from young organizers full of energy, to the humble and venerable retired California Supreme Court Justice Cruz Reynoso.  The local Latino elected officials were also there in full force, including Diana Rodriguez, Gustavo Arroyo, Sandra Vargas, Susan Heredia and Rene Aguilera.  Other local leaders included Manuel Guillot and Alex Barrios.

The energy in the room was palpable.  The  Complete Count Committee made available 50,000 copies of the ya es hora, ¡HAGASE CONTAR! bilingual fact sheet; no one could leave the event with taking away a supply of flyers for distribution throughout the community.

I was there to motivate the gathered community leaders to work hard on educating our community on the Census.  My job was easy. I had a receptive audience that is eager to secure a full Latino count and ensure that our community in this region of the state receives its fair share of resources and political representation.   If other communities are as organized and ready to work, this may be a great Census after all...
