Dear Supporter,As conservatives revert to a truly radical individualism, progressives are groping for responses. Some think the answer is to defend government. In the new edition of Democracy out today, I propose an alternative: Reclaim the civic republican tradition in U.S. politics, which emphasizes the responsibilities as well as rights of citizenship, and the vital role that communities play in forming character and enabling individual achievement.
For concrete examples we only need look back to the 1990s, when President Clinton invoked the spirit of mutual obligation in advancing his signature achievements, including national service, welfare reform and the restoration of fiscal responsibility in Washington. Some progressives seem to have forgotten this chapter in their own story, and my Democracy article aims at setting the historical record straight, and drawing lessons relevant for President Obama and Democrats today.
