Fast Track to the Future: A High-Speed Rail Agenda for America

WASHINGTON, D.C.--The best way to make a train run fast is to make sure it doesn't run slow. "The Fast Track to the Future: A High-Speed Rail Agenda for America," a new Progressive Policy Institute policy memo authored by Mark Reutter, the former editor of Railroad History and author of Making Steel: Sparrows Point and the Rise and Ruin of American Industrial Might, examines the future for high-speed rail in the United States and the obstacles ahead.

"Political leaders need to understand HSR for what it is," writes Reutter, "an entirely new and very high-tech mode of intercity travel."

The author argues that President Obama must outline a transformative vision, rather than cling to the business-as-usual incrementalism of the past, if high-speed rail is to become a reality in this country. Modernizing our infrastructure, with high-speed rail at the top of the list, should be a fundamental part of any economic recovery.
