Letter to the Editor

For months, Washington has been obsessed with one commission after another that will supposedly agree on a grand plan to reduce the nation’s debt. What all these commissions, Gangs, and committees have in common is that they are closed-door meetings proposing cuts to the programs we care about, especially Social Security. Now, another one, which some are “super-Congress” is being proposed.

After months of this squabbling, it’s time to say no more commissions or committees. Our leaders should have the courage to tell us what they’re saying behind closed doors. If the debt commissions of the past are any guide, they are discussing major cuts to Social Security and Medicare, and that simply can’t stand. There’s a reason politicians are too afraid to discuss these cuts in public.
