Stop the Drive to Dismantle Social Security
Alan Simpson the former Senator from Wyoming has been tasked with convincing the public that there is an urgent crisis in our Social Security system that demands deep drastic and destructive cuts to the program during the lame duck session of Congress at the end of the year. In order to confuse people about what his proposal actually does he says that he is "doing it for the young people."
Having read the the Bowles-Simpson plan we know that it cuts Social Security benefits for young people the most—the younger you are, the bigger the cut. Knowing this, Social Security Works gathered a group of young experts who didn’t see how Simpson’s plan to cut the system would help save it:
Having read the the Bowles-Simpson plan we know that it cuts Social Security benefits for young people the most—the younger you are, the bigger the cut. Knowing this, we recently challenged you to discuss the effects your plan would have on younger people in an open and public forum, a challenge you accepted and then backed out of.

If you truly believe that your proposal is good for young people, we invite you to discuss it in a setting in which young people can watch for themselves and decide. Accept the challenge to debate one of our young Social Security experts.
We the undersigned believe you should hold up your end of the challenge and debate them honestly, in public, so everyone can judge your proposal in the sunshine. Social Security is a critical and vital system, that provides a solid foundation that Americans can build a secure retirement on, if you want to destroy the system and tear it down brick by brick you at least should have the courage to discuss your plans with the people who will bear the brunt of the pain.
