Ratify the Equal Rights Amendment!

The Equal Rights Amendment (ERA) in a proposed United States Constitutional amendment that would provide a path to economic security for both women and men by guaranteeing that equal pay for equal work is enshrined in the United States Constitution. Women, their families and children need the ERA to be able to lift themselves out of poverty. We need the ERA to promote household stability. This is an economic issue!

Without the ERA laws like the Lily Ledbetter Act and the Pay Equity Act have no teeth, because there is nothing in the US Constitution that prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex. In fact, every constitution written since the end of World War II includes a provision that men and women are equal citizen. America is one of the few industrialized nations that has not yet recognized women as equals. This is a civil rights issue!

We need the ERA. Federal and state laws do not and cannot fully protect equal rights for women and girls, and in some cases men and boys. This is because discrimination on account of sex is not barred by the US Constitution. Antonin Scalia, Betty Ford, Patricia Ireland, Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon and Jimmy Carter have all asserted that the ERA is necessary for the protection of equal rights. This is a human rights issue!

While there is an ERA clause in the Illinois Constitution, many states do not have similar protections. Therefore, Illinois is holding equality for the American people hostage by not voting YES to ratify the ERA. With only three more states needed, Illinois can lead the charge to complete the work on this important amendment. This is a fairness issue!

Join us as we call on Illinois General Assembly members to show up on Thursday, November 20, 2014 and vote YES to ratify the ERA. This is the time to address this issue!
