Hillary Clinton took a major step forward on Social Security. In a major campaign address, Clinton laid out her economic vision for the country, and amid proposals to raise workers’ wages, she added: “We’ll help families look forward to retirement by defending and enhancing Social Security and making it easier to save for the future.”
Secretary Clinton’s choice of words is an indication that she may recognize that the best way to tackle the retirement security crisis is by expanding the one program current and future generations can rely on: Social Security. The Secretary’s focus on raising incomes of workers over the pay of CEOs would also result in a welcome boost to Social Security’s trust fund. This is big news. If Secretary Clinton is serious about increasing Social Security’s benefits, we would have an incredibly powerful ally in our fight.
