Medicare's 50th birthday is a good time to reflect on Medicare's many valuable contributions to retirement and health security. Medicare has reined in health care costs, ensured older adults and people with disabilities broad access to doctors and hospitals, promoted their health and financial security and fostered transparency, accountability and innovation throughout the health care system.
We should expand Medicare to give everyone the choice of a public health insurance option. Commercial insurers cannot and will not ever control health care costs. Rather, they shift costs to their members. And, they will never drive the kinds of system changes we need. As Robert Reich explains in the MoveOn video, for so many reasons, everyone should have the choice of a Medicare option.
Join us in urging President Obama and Members of Congress to expand Medicare so that everyone in America has a public health insurance option by signing this petition.
