Building the Future: New York State Transit Manufacturing Conference

Join stakeholders for a conference on Tuesday, September 27, 2011 at the Brooklyn Navy Yard to highlight the enormous potential for growth in transit manufacturing in New York State. With millions unemployed, it is time to put Americans back to work rebuilding our public transit systems, roads, and bridges; manufacturing advanced transportation vehicles; and laying the foundation for long-term economic recovery. As steps are taken across the U.S. to rejuvenate the domestic manufacturing sector, New York State is well positioned to create over 24,000 manufacturing jobs if policies to invest in New York’s transportation system utilize the Empire State’s existing manufacturing base.

See the one-page flyer.

New York State is uniquely positioned to benefit from local growth in the transportation and component manufacturing sector. Not only is New York located on the Northeast Corridor’s bustling rail corridor, the Empire State is home to the largest public transportation system in the United States, New York City Transit (NYCT); and by extension has the largest capital investment needs. If Albany were to embrace sustainable economic development by instituting manufacturing policy, with a focus on public transit and rail investment not only would thousands of good jobs be created; but New York State could capture the multiplier effects of continued transportation investment for years to come.

View the draft agenda

Nationwide, bringing transit and rail investments up to adequate levels will create 3.7 million direct and indirect jobs, double ridership over the next two decades, and build out a comprehensive intercity and high-speed rail system. It is time to embrace a 21st century transportation plan: one that creates millions of American jobs; provides increased transportation options and alternatives to fossil fuels; and recognizes our potential to invent and manufacture cleaner vehicles and transit systems here at home, instead of sending our dollars overseas. We are working to ensure that New York State will be a leader in Building the Future.
