Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Cleaning up toxic coastal water and reducing dead zones has been a priority of ours for a long time.  These problems kill fish, marine mammals and birds, destroy habitat, make people sick and cost the U.S. millions of dollars.  Last year, we helped a good bill that addressed those problems pass the House and nearly got it through the Senate.  We were assured at that time that bipartisan support for the measure remained and that it would be on the agenda in the 112th Congress.

Well, yesterday, the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act of 2011 passed out of Subcommittee in the House.  We are pleased that this year’s bill largely resembles the good one we worked on last year.  It does have a few weaknesses – some that are concerns for our champions in the House, but we’ll be working hard with them and with our friends in the Senate to get the strongest possible bill passed this year.

Your engagement continues to strengthen Ocean Champions' voice on Capitol Hill.  Soon, as this bill moves forward we will need your help more than ever.  Today, however, we celebrate a milestone in the fight against toxic algae and ocean dead zones.

For the oceans,

David Wilmot, Ph.D.
