Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

If you could start from scratch, how would you build the ideal ocean champion? You might look for someone who had raised their family on a coastal island whose inhabitants relied on healthy ocean ecosystems. Given the impact agriculture has on the oceans, you’d probably want someone who understood and embraced sustainable farming. You’d need someone unafraid to take on big, entrenched interests, and someone who was a skilled and savvy legislator, able to pick a fight and win it.

Well, this person exists, and is serving the constituents of Maine’s First District. While her ability and resourcefulness make her a force of nature, her passion for the environment makes her a force for nature, and today we’re proud to endorse Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-ME).

Congresswoman Pingree raised her family on the tiny offshore island of North Haven, Maine, where she ran several successful small businesses, including an organic farm. Since she was first elected in 2008, the Congresswoman’s love for the ocean and for sustainable, local farming has guided her service, and she has become a hero for the environmental community.

She has fought to improve coastal water quality by cosponsoring and working creatively to advance the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia bill, and has helped pass bills to support clean energy, protect coastal habitat and protect threatened species. She’s led efforts to empower small, sustainable, local farmers, and has battled to protect sustainable fisheries management programs that help Maine’s fisheries and its fishermen (watch her take on ocean enemy #1, Cong. Steve Southerland in this video).

“I’m proud to be endorsed by Ocean Champions.  Maine’s coast is a treasure and a vital economic engine for our state. It is critically important for us to take concrete steps now to protect and preserve our environment,” said Congresswoman Pingree.

As a Maine state Senator, she rose quickly by taking on powerful adversaries to achieve landmark wins for Maine’s environment, health care and social justice. With her influence growing at the federal level, we’re very glad to have her on our side!
