Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Ocean Champions believes in democracy, and would never argue for a transition to aristocracy.  Nevertheless, we believe the U.S. Senate will be better in 2013 if it has a King, so today, we proudly endorse Angus King for Maine’s open Senate seat.

With his long history in the clean tech sector (he owned and operated a wind farm from 2007 until his 2012 Senate run), King brings a commitment to sustainable energy, both as a means of addressing ocean acidification and climate change, and as a platform for economic growth.

King also sees the Gulf of Maine as one of our most important resources and believes it must be managed to preserve its beauty and productivity for generations to come.  Maine’s commercial fishing industry is an important economic engine for the state, and protecting those jobs requires sustainable management of Maine’s fisheries.

“The oceans are important to our environment, a significant aspect of Maine's culture and heritage, and support  a substantial portion of our economy," said Governor King.  "The Clean Air Act and Clean Water Act championed by Sen. Ed Muskie have provided essential protections for our natural resources for generations. If elected as the next US Senator from Maine I would be honored to continue Maine’s legacy as a leader in this important work.”

Ocean Champions has previously endorsed Senator Olympia Snowe (R-ME), who has been a great advocate for healthy oceans and the people who depend on them throughout her career.  We believe Angus King is a champion ready and able to continue the tradition of great ocean Senators from Maine.
