Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Happy Friday!  Here are two more endorsements as we surge forward to take back Congress for our oceans!

We’re often asked, “Does Ocean Champions care about the Great Lakes too?”  The answer is, “of course we do!”  They’re important aquatic ecosystems that also impact our oceans.  Fortunately, Senators who represent Great Lakes states also care about the oceans, and today, we’re proud to endorse Senator Debbie Stabenow (D-MI).  Senator Stabenow:
  • Recently stepped up to cosponsor the National Endowment for the Oceans Act (NEO), which would establish the first annual fund for ocean conservation
  • Led the fight against invasive Asian Carp in the Great Lakes, and recently passed the Stop Invasive Species Act, which attempts to mitigate this threat before it disrupts the Great Lakes ecosystem
  • Cosponsored bills to expand the Thunder Bay Marine Sanctuary and to fund land and water conservation

Further west, we’ve identified another Senate leader who isn’t known for her ocean work, but should be, Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA).  Since first being elected in 1992, Senator Feinstein:

  • Provided vocal leadership on important issues, such as restoration of the San Francisco Bay and Lake Tahoe
  • Sponsored and cosponsored a number of bills to prevent expansion of offshore drilling
  • Is working to expand the boundaries of the Cordell Bank National Marine Sanctuary
  • Threw her weight behind legislation to help salmon and billfish, and helped pass the Shark Conservation Act of 2009
  • Has shown a passion for addressing the growing problem of marine debris, epitomized by the discovery of the great Pacific garbage patch
These influential senior Senators understand the importance of healthy ocean ecosystems and are important champions for our issues.
