Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Happy New Year!  Like everyone, we’re incredibly excited about the prospects of a new year.  Before venturing forward, however, we wanted to thank you for your help in making 2012 a great one for the oceans.

As you know, the 112th Congress was one of the worst environmental Congresses of all time.  This meant literally hundreds of attacks on clean air, clean water, and of course, on our oceans.  Fortunately, our relationships with champions helped beat a number of attacks and deliver some victories:

  • We worked with House champion Congressman Sam Farr (D-CA) and Senate champions Mark Begich (D-AK) and Maria Cantwell (D-WA) to pass the Trash Free Seas Act.
  • The National Endowment for the Oceans (NEO) is an important initiative to establish the first annual fund for ocean conservation.  We’ve worked closely with the bill’s architect, Senator Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI) to help pass it in the Senate.
  • Two of our priorities will always be maintaining strong fishery conservation laws and advancing the National Ocean Policy.  Both initiatives came under heavy attack in the House, but we worked hard to build close relationships with influential Senate leaders to make sure the bad House bills never saw the light of day.
Of course, we are focused first and foremost on building more and better champions for ocean conservation by helping the good guys win.  Given how tough the 112th Congress was on oceans, we knew we had to play bigger than ever, and we did.  We helped elect 43 champions (out of 46 endorsements)!  This includes many new Members who are coming to Washington D.C. committed to changing the game for ocean issues.  When the 113th Congress is sworn in, there will be 51 champions serving, including 18 in the Senate (almost 1/5 of the upper house).

With all this momentum, we’re energized heading into 2013.  There will be opportunities and attacks, and we’ll need your help once again to protect our oceans and the animals that call it home.  Before we move forward, we take this day to thank you for being on the ocean team!

Thanks again,
