Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

This is why it is so important to elect champions to the U.S. Congress.

Tomorrow the Senate Commerce Committee (Chaired by ocean champion Mark Begich (D-AK) will mark up a package of good ocean bills, including:

  • S. 1254, the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act
  • S. 267, the Pirate Fishing Elimination Act
  • S. 269, the International Fisheries Stewardship and Enforcement Act
  • S. 839, the Coral Reef Conservation Amendments Act
  • S. 1344, the Arctic Research, Monitoring and Observing Act

These bills are led by champions such as Senator Begich, and Senators Bill Nelson (D-FL), Maria Cantwell (D-WA), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Brian Schatz (D-HI), Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Ben Cardin (D-MD), Angus King (I-ME) and Barbara Boxer (D-CA), with others continuing to sign on as cosponsors.  They are designed to improve coastal water quality, stop the illegal fishing that threatens critical international fisheries, preserve sensitive coral habitat, and improve our understanding of the vital arctic ecosystem.

If they pass markup, these good bills will be ready for a vote by the full Senate!
