Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

As many of you know, Florida Congressman Steve Southerland’s willingness to push anti-ocean policies earned him the title of Ocean Enemy #1.  Of course, the best way to defeat his anti-ocean agenda is to build an ocean majority in Congress.  This means working to elect more and more good guys like the 51 endorsed champions serving today.  It also means beating the bad guys like Congressman Southerland.

So with 2014 approaching, we’ve been watching his race closely, and were thrilled to see the following headline:

“New poll of FL CD 2 shows Gwen Graham leading Steve Southerland, 44% to 41%.”

We know Southerland has alienated commercial fishermen because his policies would destroy their livelihood.  Now he’s getting sideways with other voters in his district.  He voted against the bill to end the government shutdown and has been identified as one of a handful of Congressmen who scuttled the bipartisan farm bill.  These policies are not playing well in northern Florida, and Southerland may pay a price.

Thanks to your support, we played big in this race last year and helped show that Southerland is weak and can be beaten by the right candidate.  His likely 2014 opponent, Gwen Graham grew up in district, has a strong brand and is running the kind of smart campaign that can beat him.
