Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

We are in the home-stretch of the election, and we want to highlight three close races where Ocean Champions-endorsed candidates  could really use your help:

These are three of the most competitive races in the country, and could break either way between now and Election Day.  Please make a contribution to any or all of these candidates to help us build political power for the oceans.  Here's a little more detail on each race:

Mark Kirk

If you follow politics, you know that there is yet another strong Democratic wave building that is likely to increase Democratic majorities in both the House and the Senate.  As a moderate Republican in a swing district, Rep. Mark Kirk is swimming against this tide.  Because of his strong commitment to protecting our oceans and the Great Lakes, particularly on issues liking preventing mercury pollution and stopping the spread of invasive species, Mark Kirk has earned our support, and we're proud to back him.  As we've learned from numerous legislative battles, having strong Republican voices is critical on many ocean issues.  And Mark Kirk is one of the strongest.  Recent polls show that this race could go either way, and Kirk is at real risk of losing his seat.  We need to help him keep it.  We've already made significant contributions to his campaign, and now it's time for you to do the same.  Visit his donation page here.

Frank Kratovil

Frank Kratovil (D) is running to replace Rep. Wayne Gilchrest (R-MD), a great ocean champion from Maryland's Eastern Shore who got taken out in the February primary by anti-environment zealot State Sen. Andy Harris (R).  Kratovil is an ocean lover who has pledged to carry on Rep. Gilchrest's work on behalf of ocean health and Gilchrest has crossed party lines to strongly endorse Kratovil.  This is a district that normally elects Republicans, but Kratovil is riding the strong Democratic wave that is sweeping the country to make this an exceptionally competitive race.  Every prognosticator we follow rates this a true "Toss-Up," and it's anyone's guess who will prevail.  That's why it's critical for you to make a contribution to Frank Kratovil today, so that he has the resources he needs to defeat Harris.

Kay Hagan

North Carolina State Senator Kay Hagan (D) is currently favored to pull off one of the biggest upsets in the country by beating incumbent Sen. Elizabeth Dole (R-NC).  We've gotten to know Hagan, and we know that she's going to be a far better Senator for the oceans than Dole, who has been missing in action on our issues, despite the importance of healthy oceans to her home state.  Hagan is currently favored in the polls, but her lead is a narrow one, so she needs all the resources she can get to maintain her lead and triumph on Nov. 4.  You can donate to her campaign here.

On your behalf, Ocean Champions has made significant contributions to each of these candidates.  The health of our oceans is dictated by what happens on Election Day.  You can make a difference by contributing TODAY to these candidates.  Thank you for everything you're doing.

For the oceans,

The Ocean Champions Team

Why Are Ocean Champions Endorsements So Important?

When you consider that more than 53% of our nation's population resides on a highly abused 17% of our coasts, and only 5% of our nations political leadership champion ocean health; we think it's important to get more Ocean Champions elected.

Ocean Champions endorsements help to elect ocean-conscious Congressional leadership that will better represent our needs.  Our Congressional Champions work to protect waterways while recognizing the direct effect of the oceans' health on our families' health.

Our endorsements provide:

Campaign Funding- through Ocean Champions PAC.

Independent Campaigning - our unique 501(c)(4) structure positions us as the only ocean group that directly works to elect (and sometimes to defeat) members of Congress.  In 2006 we played a major role in getting rid of "Ocean Enemy #1", Rep. Richard Pombo (R-Ca.), by funding a door-to-door canvas in his district.

Social Networking Support -  (YAY YOU!)  Last year, you and your friends sent thousands of letters and calls of support to Ocean Champions Representatives and candidates who are working to move healthy ocean policy into action.  There is power in your voice.

Campaign Insight - Our unique bipartisan approach provides incredible social and scientific insight to members on both sides of the aisle.

With what is shaping up to be one of the most important election years of an era-it's never been more important to elect Ocean Champions who better represent our needs.
