Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Ocean Champions believes ocean health should be a priority for both parties and thus we look for political champions on both sides of the aisle. While our slate of endorsements in this election has tilted often to the left, there are still strong ocean champions to be found on the right. One of the best examples is Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack (R-CA), and we are proud to announce our endorsement of the Congresswoman for California's 45th District.

Mrs. Bono Mack has shown that she believes ocean and environmental health are priority investments for America and her district. She has fought to save critical habitat, passing legislation to establish the Santa Rosa and San Jacinto Mountains National Monument, which protects 252,000 acres and a number of endangered species, and has co-sponsored numerous bills to preserve and restore important natural areas. She co-sponsored the Harmful Algal Bloom and Hypoxia Research and Control Act to improve coastal water quality, and she has been a leader in the fight to restore the Salton Sea, which sustains millions of birds, including some endangered species. She also helped pass the Public Lands Omnibus, which provided for coastal and estuarine land conservation and funded ocean acidification research and monitoring.

In addition to supporting measures to protect important habitat, the Congresswoman has moved to preserve threatened species as well. In the 111th Congress alone, she has backed bills to protect sea otters and marine turtles. She established a deep connection to the natural world as a child, and has said she feels a need to protect America's natural resources so that future generations can enjoy and appreciate them as well.

Even with this strong record, the Congresswoman's most notable commitment to protecting our oceans and the environment may have been through her courageous vote in favor of the Waxman-Markey Climate Bill. As one of only eight Republicans voting for the Bill, Mrs. Bono Mack took a major political risk to vote her conscience on this important issue - one she continues to stand behind today. She knows that reducing greenhouse gas emissions and moving to renewable energy is the best way to protect our planet and our oceans, as well as to establish energy independence.

For her courage, leadership and commitment, Congresswoman Mary Bono Mack is the best candidate to represent California's 45th District.
