Ocean Champions: Political Champions for Ocean Conservation

Dear Friend,

Fish in U.S. waters are continually under attack. Massive fishing fleets harvest them faster than they can reproduce, driving the fisheries toward collapse. Those who evade the nets and hooks must fight to survive in coastal water polluted with fertilizers, pesticides, plastic and oil. These fish are critical to healthy ocean ecosystems, as well as to human health, jobs and our economy.

Now Congressman Doc Hastings (R-WA), the Chairman of the Natural Resources Committee, has just introduced three bills to greatly increase offshore drilling in the Gulf while opening up new sites along the California, Northeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts!  Gulf fisheries will take decades to recover from BP's carelessness.  What would a spill in the Mid-Atlantic do to threatened fish such as black sea bass?

That’s why we need your help to raise $50,000 to protect our fish by:

  • Fighting expanded offshore oil drilling to prevent another BP disaster.

  • Ending overfishing. Magnuson-Stevens, a law we helped pass, requires catch limits to stop overfishing in all U.S. fisheries by the end of this year. Lawmakers who care only about short-term exploitation are trying to kill these limits, allowing fisheries to collapse.

  • Funding innovative fisheries management solutions that tie the economic interests of fishermen with conservation goals. Special interests are blocking these proven programs through a systematic misinformation campaign.

  • Cleaning up toxic coastal water and shrinking ocean dead zones by slowing the flow of harmful chemicals, plastic, and nutrients into the ocean.

As the only ocean group that endorses and supports Members of Congress, our voice is heard, but we need your help to make it even stronger at this critical time. Please become a “Fighter for Fish” by donating generously to Ocean Champions today.

The attacks on fish and on these good initiatives have already begun, fueled by large special interest groups who devastate our precious natural resources for short term gain. We’re working closely with our champions on the Hill to make sure our side wins and we need your help!

Help us reach our goal of $50,000 by Memorial Day to convince Congress that fighting for fish is the right thing to do!
