5th Annual Levee Breach Bike Tour

Sign up now!

The guided bike tour starts at City Park. Taking marked bike routes, cyclists start by riding along scenic Bayou St. John to the Levee Exhibit Hall and Garden at the east breach of the London Avenue Canal. Founder Sandy Rosenthal will lead a short discussion. Next is a pump station, other interesting sights and a ride along scenic Lake Pontchartrain to the 17th Street Canal breach in Lakeview. The route is designed to follow marked bike routes. Cyclists can view the breach sites and also the neighborhoods affected by the failure of levees designed and built by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. Finally, everyone will bike back through City Park. The bike tour is 12 miles. NOTE: You must bring your own bike.

The Levee Breach Bike Tour is a healthy way to learn more about the worst civil engineering disaster in the history of the United States. One of the breach
the 17th Street Canal, has been deemed eligible for the National Register of Historic Places. This tour is inspired by Jane Jacobs Walk, a non-profit that encourages people to leave their homes to come together outside their automobiles.

Enter City Park's main entrance, take your first right, go over the bridge, take another right and continue along Big Lake to the parking lot of the Boat Rental shop.
