* A Letter from Executive Director Kathie Turner

Our essential team of volunteers includes me, letter writers, reviewers, editors and proofreaders, as well as technical experts and general advisers. Among them, I am especially privileged to work with Pat, one of PS's founding volunteers, a self-described "tough old bird" who, at nearly 86 and spending most of his time in a wheelchair, is usually busy doing peace & social concerns work for his Friends Meeting.

You probably know about Jim Harris, the founder of Progressive Secretary, a man with a huge heart and intellect who built the original letter-writing computer systems from scratch back in 1998 and supported it largely with his disability pension. I started volunteering with Jim over a decade ago when I was first diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. I wanted to do something meaningful with my life, so when Jim sent out a call for volunteers I happily started writing, editing, and proof reading letters, and picked up administrative tasks as well.

When Jim was diagnosed with cancer, he asked me to make sure Progressive Secretary survived. Sometimes I’ve been overwhelmed, but I’ve always believed in Jim’s vision unconditionally. And when he let go of this life last summer, I had no doubt that my mission is to preserve his legacy and keep PS going strong.

Now that I, myself, am adjusting to life with a greater disability, I feel even closer to Jim’s experience and even prouder to be part of this national community of people who care about making the U.S. a more just society. Asking for help is always a challenge, but today I need to ask you to contribute a few dollars toward our very small operating costs.

A Letter from the Founder of Progressive Secretary, Jim Harris (1940-2011)

Thank you for your interest in Progressive Secretary finances. We need your help!

In 1998, after I was disabled from leukemia and living on a very limited income, I began Progressive Secretary with my own funds, because I believed deeply that more letters from progressives are needed in the struggle for peace and justice.

I continue to finance it myself, aided by generous contributions sent in by people like you. In the beginning Progressive Secretary required only a home computer and software for letter writing and databases.

[By 2010], with more than 4,000 members and an annual output of 200 or more letters, it costs over $15,000 per year to keep it going despite every effort to be frugal. I pay as much of this as I can from my monthly Social security pension and miscellaneous receipts.

The rest, however, is covered from donations. Progressive Secretary simply couldn't survive without your help.

You will be interested to learn that after my fingers failed, I tried to keep up the massive daily mailings using local volunteers, and even a voice-activated program, but that didn't work. It has become necessary to contract for low-cost programming services overseas. Daily work by experts is absolutely necessary to make sure the computers send out the many thousands of messages we now handle each day.
