This Week's Alert!

If you do nothing else, here is the most important action you can take:

Reduce Carbon Pollution; Move to a Clean Energy Economy

2SSB 6203 is Governor Inslee's carbon tax bill for $20 per metric ton, amended to $12 per metric ton.  LWV supports this bill even though the proposed rate is probably too low to reach GHG reduction goals. LWVWA believes that global warming is a serious issue that requires immediate action and supports legislation to reduce carbon emissions by putting a price on carbon.

Click here urge your Senator to support this bill to address the effects of climate change by reducing GHG emissions while generating revenue to promote renewable energy, forest health, water quality, and assistance to impacted populations.

Protect Puget Sound by Passing the Oil Transportation Safety Bill

Increased oil transport in Washington State by tankers, trains, and pipelines, along with heavier tar sand oil, have greatly increased oil spill risks to Puget Sound. Bill generates revenue to hire additional inspectors and funds the Oil Spill Response account with an increase in the barrel tax.

Click here to urge your Senators to support and pass 2SSB 6269.

Keep Atlantic Salmon Net Pen Aquaculture Out of Puget Sound

Atlantic salmon spread disease and parasites such as sea lice to our native Pacific salmon, and can escape, multiply, compete with, and even eat native salmon species. EHB 2957 would phase out non-native marine finfish net pen farms, including Atlantic salmon net pens in our state waters.

Action Alert Follow-up – Legislative Public Records – SB 6617

Thank you to the hundreds of you who responded to last week’s Action Alert regarding SB 6617 and sent over 1500 emails to your legislators. Despite our efforts, the bill flew through both houses with veto-proof margins and is currently on the Governor’s desk.

The bill in some ways represents a step forward for disclosure, but also has portions that raises concerns. The League is committed to working with legislators and others over the next 10 months to craft a bill that would address those concerns and reflect input from many perspectives.

If you would like to be part of that effort please click here
