Tell Congress: Stop Voucher Amendments in the House & Senate Tax Bills

As tax code reform bills work their way (quickly) through the U.S. House and Senate, our friend Betsy DeVos and her pro-privatization friends are proposing amendments including provisions for federally supported vouchers. It’s a bad bill getting worse by the minute.

We need you to contact your member of Congress today, and send a strong message of opposition to ANY of voucher provisions.  Will you help?

House version of the bill:

The offending amendment would allow current 529 college savings plans—tax deductible savings accounts that parents can use to save money for college—to also be used for K-12 expenses, including private school tuition. This proposal has the backing of the right-wing Heritage Foundation and ALEC, the conservative American Legislative Exchange Council. But critics—even some pro-choice critics—note that 529 plans are mostly used by families with a household income of over $100,000, so it doesn’t help low-income students.  Instead, it strips federal funding for our public schools and allows it to go towards private schools.

Senate version of the bill:

The first provision would allow a tax deduction (as a charitable contribution) for tuition payments to a religious school. The second provision would create a K-12 education tax credit for corporate and individual contributions to state-level non-profits that provide scholarships (read: vouchers) to children in low- and middle-income families. This is a federal tax-credit voucher program.

Education Secretary Betsy DeVos is this administration’s most unpopular Cabinet member. She draws protests wherever she goes, and Congress appeared to repudiate her myopic school choice agenda when they rejected her slash-and-burn education budget back this summer. But she keeps on smiling. And now we know why. Behind the scenes, she has helped ease a couple of voucher proposals in to the Republican tax overhaul—hoping to divert federal dollars to private and religious schools. We need to make our voices heard.

We need you to contact your member of Congress today, and send a strong message of opposition to ANY of these voucher provisions. Will you help?
