Facts You Should Know

  • There are more African-Americans in prison, on probation or on parole than were enslaved in 1850
  • African-Americans account for 13% of marijuana use; however they make up 80% of the prison population incarcerated for marijuana use
  • More than 5 million Americans have lost their right to vote due to a past felony conviction
  • The US has the highest incarceration rate in the world with 2.3 million prisoners; China has 1.6 million
  • For profit prisons have risen 37% between 2002 and 2009. In 2011, Corrections Corporation of America recorded $1.7 billion in total revenue and the Geo Group recorded $1.6 billion. These companies spent more than $19.6 billion on lobbying over the past 10 years
  • In 2003, African-American youth made up 16% of the nation’s overall juvenile population, but accounted for 45% of juvenile arrests
  • In many states prisoners are included in the census not where they formerly lived but in the community where they are incarcerated

As we enter the new session of Congress beginning in January, we will be watching for pertinent legislation being introduced or re-introduced from the previous session. Should you become aware of any new legislation pertinent to this issue team, please do not hesitate to contact us at emc@pdamerica.org

You can explore recently introduced legislation at www.govtrack.us. This is a tool that includes full information regarding the legislation, a means to track the legislation, will email you updates on legislation and legislators, and provides a means by which to contact legislators on specific legislation.

PDA Letter Drops
Next Letter Drop: March 18th
      Letter drops may be scheduled anytime during the week of the letter drop. Once you have completed you letter drop, let us know and we will follow up with a phone call. Remember, the purpose is to make our elected representatives in the Congress aware of progressive legislation and to educate them on it, and we can't do it without you, and there are a number of way to do this. Some folks just drop off the letter, while others schedule appointments to speak to staffers in their  home district offices. Some go as individuals, some go as groups, and some go with a coalition. How ever you decide to do it, we'd love to get a picture of you delivering the letter.
