It's Time to Expand our Most Popular Safety Net Program
2015 has already been a landmark year in our fight to expand Social Security. Thanks to you, virtually the entire Senate Democratic caucus has gone on record supporting expansion and in the House 116 out of 188 Democrats (and counting) are on board.
But the White House remains silent. Next month, the White House will hold its once-a-decade Conference on Aging. But as of now, Social Security expansion is not on the agenda.
Next month, on July 13, the Obama administration will hold the once-a-decade White House Conference on Aging. This is an opportunity to address the retirement security crisis and take action to correct it the only way we can: by increasing Social Security benefits. But shockingly, the conference’s draft policy brief leaves out any discussion of the need to expand Social Security benefits.
Sign the petition to the White House Conference on Aging. Tell them that any discussion about American retirement security must include Social Security expansion! Right now, Social Security has a $2.8 trillion surplus, can pay out every benefit owed to every eligible American for the next 18 years and approximately 80% of benefits owed after that. All we need to do is ask the wealthy to start paying their fair share and we not only extend the lifespan of the Social Security trust fund, we can increase benefits for the majority of Americans.
The White House Conference on Aging is a major opportunity to shape the policy around our earned benefits today and for decades to come. That's why we need to be sure that Social Security expansion has a place at the table.
Protecting and expanding Social Security is popular across the political spectrum with 79% of likely voters – Democrats, Republicans and Independents – supporting expansion. It is time for the policy makers in Washington to catch-up with the American people.
In August Social Security will be 80 years old. That's right, for 8 decades Social Security has kept the promise that after a lifetime of work there will be retirement security. Sadly, many women who have spent a lifetime as caregivers do not receive the retirement security they deserve. Expanding Social Security is fair and necessary.
Thank you for your continued support. Together we are telling our elected officials in no uncertain terms: Expand, don’t cut Social Security!
