Stop the Phillips 66 Rail Spur Project

Dear Supporter,

More than 5 million California residents live in the "blast zone" of an oil train, and while California claims to be a “climate leader,” we are seeing an ongoing, rapid expansion of oil industry infrastructure across the state. Now Phillips 66 wants to expand a rail yard in San Luis Obispo County — at the Nipomo Mesa Refinery — to transport millions of gallons of dangerous crude oil along California's rails each year.

We need to stop them from endangering our communities!

If the Phillips 66 Rail Spur project gets approved next month, communities up and down the coast will be exposed to hundreds of mile-long, explosive oil trains passing through their neighborhoods each year.

On February 4, we are going to San Luis Obispo County to draw a line at the County Planning Commission hearing. The Planning Commission will be making a critical decision on the Phillips 66 rail expansion project, and they need to hear from us.

Will you join us to stop an onslaught of oil trains from coming through California?

What: Phillips 66 Oil Train Rally & Public Hearing
When: Thursday, February 4
Where: Bus will pick up at Culver City Expo Line Station at 4:00 a.m. and at Van Nuys Metrolink Station at 4:30 a.m.

California's oil fields, pipelines and refineries are all aging and breaking down. The Porter Ranch Gas Leak, the Plains All American Pipeline Spill in Santa Barbara, and the Torrance and Richmond Refinery explosions are all prime examples of dangerous oil industry infrastructure. We must fight off the new threat to our communities: highly explosive oil trains.

These oil trains are accidents waiting to happen. On July 26, 2013 a 74-car train carrying Bakken crude derailed in Lac-Megantic, a small town in Quebec. The derailment and resulting explosion killed 47 people and leveled half of the downtown. Between 2008 and 2013, the number of oil trains criss-crossing North America grew by 4100%, with hundreds of dangerous accidents in their wake. The Phillips 66 expansion will only expose California communities to danger of the same magnitude.

Enough is enough. We must stop exposing our communities to Big Oil's disasters, and we need to end our addiction to fossil fuels. Building oil infrastructure like this locks us in to decades of dependence on oil, and puts the communities and people we love in harm's way. We need to take a stand to restore our democracy and hold our officials accountable.

This rail expansion will impact everyone; it's time to stand together and stop it. We're getting on the bus. Join us!
